Resumo

The objective is to study how the Tourism Education at the Thomas Eugene LoveJoy State School in the community of Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro do Tumbira is worked and what is it contribution to the education and citizenship of the students. The community is located in Iranduba, a municipality in the interior of the Amazon, within the limits of Conservation Units inserted in the Mosaic of Protected Areas of the Lower Rio Negro. We used the work Educating Educators in Tourism: Manual of Education in Tourism and Hospitality proposed by Chris Cooper and the World Tourism Organization, in a research of qualitative character, integrating the interview and the observation. The socioeconomic context of Tumbira in a Reserve for Sustainable Development in the Amazon and the work of third sector institutions over the years influenced the community to work community-based tourism as an alternative source of income and because of this projects and initiatives in the context of formal and non-formal education, in order to prepare young community members for the new reality of conservation unit, as well as labor for tourism. The study indicates that the projects and initiatives contribute strongly to the training of young people, but much more can be done to improve the proposal of tourism education.
