Resumo
The present study proposes the contextualization, analysis and transcription of the opera As
variedades de Proteu, with text by Antonio José da Silva, o Judeu, and music by Antonio
Teixeira. The opera was premiered in 1737, in Lisbon, just before the arrestment of Antonio
José da Silva by the Inquisition. Since it has its own characteristics, it is also possible to find
the connections with the other operas by the same authors. This work contextualizes the opera
in the Portuguese theatrical and musical environment on the beginning of the 18th century, and
brings not only the influence from other countries, but also its diffusion in Brazil and other
American colonies. The musical analysis focuses on the rhetoric, its figures, schemata,
searching the meanings which bring the music closer to the text. The complete transcription
was made based on the manuscript parts from the Paço Ducal de Vila Viçosa archive, in
Portugal.
