Violência contra os povos indígenas do Amazonas: série histórica 2013-2023

Abstract

To identify the main forms of violence against Indigenous peoples in the state of Amazonas from 2013 to 2023. Method: This study is a documentary, cross-sectional, descriptive research, utilizing the Report on Violence Against Indigenous Peoples in Brazil published by the Indigenous Missionary Council (CIMI). Quantitative data were retrospectively tabulated for the period from 2013 to 2023 using Microsoft Excel, where data analysis and graphs were also constructed. Results: A total of 10 reports were analyzed retrospectively, covering the period from 2013 to 2023. During this timeframe, 2,395 cases of violence against Indigenous property, 395 cases of violence against individuals, and 2,380 instances of violence due to public authority negligence were recorded. The year 2023 had the highest number of incidents, with 755 reports, marking it as the most violent period of the past 11 years. Conclusion: Violence against Indigenous peoples in Amazonas reflects the absence of effective public policies, resulting in severe practices such as assaults, murders, suicides, invalidation of Indigenous identity, inefficiency in land demarcation, and predatory exploitation of natural resources. These issues are exacerbated by the lack of oversight in Indigenous territories and the degradation of institutions responsible for protecting their rights, a consequence of budget cuts. This highlights the urgent need for actions that ensure the protection and dignity of Indigenous peoples in Brazil
