Musical composition is a practice that requires knowledge from different studies in music, among
them Harmony, Counterpoint, Musical Forms and Orchestration. This work aims to demonstrate the
application of these skills on the composition process, such as the changes in the concept of
harmony and tonality, the technical improvement of the establishment of the form, the challenges of
writing for bow instruments, and the use of other artistic languages, namely the literature, as a
source of inspiration for the musical work. The first part has a narrative description of the
composition of the string quartet The Tell-Tale Heart, describing the increasing on the musical ideas
from the composer's point of view, using the auto-ethnographic research method. In the second part,
a structural analysis of the musical work, detailing and exemplifying, in the score, the procedures
used, in addition to its relations with the homonymous tale of Edgar Allan Poe. This research seeks
to achieve reflective considerations on the compositional process in addition to the structural
