This article addresses the importance of play in the teaching-learning process in early childhood education, highlighting how it enriches children's emotional well-being, fostering an emotional bond between educator and student. This bond contributes to the understanding, construction, and modification of the student's identity, offering a more meaningful and engaging approach than rote learning based solely on content transmission. The research reinforces the need to integrate playfulness into pedagogical practices, considering it a challenge for the educational system but also a powerful learning tool. The use of educational games in the classroom fosters content assimilation and provides new ways for children to engage in interactive activities, encouraging them to reflect and explore the space in which they are inserted. Through play and communication, children consolidate their initial language skills, contributing to their cognitive and social development. This study's general objective is to identify how play can enhance the teaching-learning process in early childhood education, given the diverse needs and challenges faced by educators and students in this early stage of schooling. We list the following specific objectives: a) conceptualize and analyze play as a pedagogical tool; b) discuss the contributions of playfulness to the teaching-learning process; and c) identify the role of the teacher in games and play in early childhood education. The research is based on a literature review with a qualitative and descriptive approach, considering the adopted theoretical perspective. The analysis is based on scientific articles and materials related to the topic, with the intention of affirming that, through playfulness, children learn more meaningfully, promoting cognitive, affective, and social development. The results indicate that playfulness plays a fundamental role in the educational process, contributing significantly to children's cognitive, emotional, and social development. Games and play are identified as essential pedagogical tools to stimulate learning in a pleasurable and meaningful way, promoting autonomy, creativity and social interaction.
