Resumo

The present work aimed to evaluate the insecticidal and repellent potential of the aqueous, hydroalcoholic, and alcoholic extracts of the birdweed (Struthanthus flexicaulis) in controlling ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Ants are considered a notorious pest that represents a significant challenge for agriculture, also thriving in urban areas, so their presence can hinder outdoor activities. Nests can be built under structures such as pavements and foundations, which can cause structural problems or collapse them. They are traditionally controlled with synthetic insecticides that, although effective, have serious environmental consequences and contribute to the development of resistance in insects. In light of this, we sought to investigate sustainable and less harmful alternatives to the environment; for this, the extracts were prepared to evaluate the mortality and repellency of ants at different concentrations. The plant material was collected in Parintins/AM. The tests were applied with two concentrations of 5% and 8% of the aqueous, hydroalcoholic, and alcoholic leaf extract. The results indicated that the alcoholic extract at a concentration of 5% showed the highest mortality rate of 80%, this same extract showed a greater effect in repellent action. The aqueous extract also had a significant effect, although less pronounced. These results suggest that mistletoe may be a promising tool for integrated pest management, contributing to the reduction of Chemical insecticide use and its negative impacts. Future studies are recommended to deepen the understanding of the mechanisms and action of the extracts and their applicability in diferente agricultural crops.
