Os efeitos da pandemia da covid-19 na saúde mental de idosos do centro de convivência do idoso de Tefé/AM

Abstract

This study investigated the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of older adults attending the Senior Citizens' Community Center (CCI) in Tefé, Amazonas. Using a qualitative approach and ethnography as an analytical tool, the researchers conducted in-person, semi-structured interviews with eleven participants: ten older adults (aged 65 to 85) and one psychologist from the institution. Data collection aimed to explore in depth the pandemic's primary consequences for the older adults' mental health and its post-pandemic effects, as well as to identify how family support helped them navigate this period of public emergency. The study also assessed the CCI's impact on this population's quality of life and well-being. The results showed that approximately 80% of the older adults were negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, reporting feelings of loneliness, anxiety, sadness, and fear. Social isolation was identified as one of the most adverse factors. Analysis of the narratives revealed the family's fundamental role in providing socio-emotional support, as well as the importance of the CCI as a space for social interaction and health promotion. The discussion draws on studies by Bosi (2003, 2004), Bosi and Alves (2023), Camarano (2010), Minayo (2001), and Neri (2015, 2020), among others, addressing issues related to aging, memory, mental health, and the social vulnerabilities of older adults. The study concludes that the pandemic significantly impacted the mental health of this age group, underscoring the need for greater socio-familial attention and the implementation and development of public policies and intersectoral support systems tailored to this population.
