Resumo

The Brazilian territory, considered one of the largest in extent, is covered by several types of ecosystems, which allows to place Brazil as one of the countries with the greatest diversity of life on the planet, sheltering unique and significant examples of fauna and flora. Nevertheless, data on this biological diversity are scarce or unknown. The objective of this work was to analyze the collection of the biological collections of the Center for Higher Studies of Itacoatiara (CESIT). The present study was developed in the municipality of Itacoatiara (AM), more precisely in the dependencies of CESIT. The data concerning the biological collections were collected and later categorized in such a way as to respect the particularities of each collection. The categorization process sought to know the diversity of specimens, mainly of national origin and to frame the collections in parameters related to the Forestry Engineering area, one of the courses offered by CESIT. In addition, it was also sought to know the amount of published works that used the biological collections of CESIT as a theme. Five biological collections were identified, which are divided into: botanical collections (herbarium, carpoteca, xiloteca) and zoological collections (entomological and ornithological). Only the botanical collections presented data regarding the number of specimens, the frequency of incorporation of the samples, the most representative botanical families, the origin of the samples collected and the diversity of the samples from the State of Amazonas. As for the publications, 13 scientific papers were found during the years 2013 to 2017, of which the greatest number of published projects were the herbarium and the xiloteca, with 6 and 4 publications respectively. The present study concludes that the lack of continuous and specialized monitoring in all biological collections of the CESIT is a factor that makes it impossible to develop the scientific potential and use of the data in its entirety. In this way, the realization of new studies in the area, besides supplying the lack of information related to the theme, are essential tools for dissemination of knowledge and dissemination of these historical museums to society.
