Resumo
This research examines the boi bumbá dance, an art that is part of the Amazonian culture, embodying the stories and traditions of the Amazonian peoples. The study aimed to understand the teaching of folk dances to adolescents in Elementary School II at a school in the northern zone of Manaus, and the students' perceptions of the boi bumbá dance. This is a field investigation, of a qualitative, descriptive and basic nature, which consisted of conducting semi-structured interviews with five elementary school students II and an art teacher. The data collected were analyzed based on the content analysis developed by Bardin (2011) and showed that the students and the art teacher have diverse perceptions and a basic, but not systematized, knowledge about the boi bumbá folk dance. It was observed that both the students and the art teacher recognize the importance of this knowledge for strengthening cultural identity and for valuing the cultural expressions of regional and national dances. The study also highlighted the need to overcome prejudices and stereotypes associated with the practice of dance.
