Resumo

This work examines the evolutionary process, in Brazil, of groups in which the guitar is the central instrument, focusing on the following formations: orchestras, chamber-music groups, and groups; excluding, therefore, guitar duos, trios, and quartets. It also addresses the trajectory of the instrument in the country, since the arrival, in the 16th century, of plucked stringed instruments related to it; through periods of marginalization and prejudice, to the growing acceptance, popularization and professionalization of some musicians who dedicated themselves to it. The work was based on documentary, bibliographic and oral history research (in the form of interviews). The latter were crucial for the elaboration of the last chapter, in which it was sought to present a more detailed study of the history and activities of the Orquestra de Violões do Amazonas (OVAM), since its foundation, showing its development and importance in the amazonian music scene.
