Resumo

This undergraduate thesis, in the form of an experience report, investigates the environmental and socio-environmental impacts of the BR-319 highway, focusing on the stretch connecting Careiro da Várzea and Careiro Castanho in the state of Amazonas. Built during the period of the Military Dictatorship in Brazil and currently the subject of debates regarding its reconstruction, the highway is associated with deforestation, wildfires, and pressures on local communities. The objective of the research was to analyze the positive and negative effects of the BR-319, proposing strategies to mitigate impacts and promote sustainability. The methodology included analysis of Environmental Impact Reports and Studies, oral interviews, and a literature review with authors such as Philip Fearnside and Shiguenoli Miyamoto. The results indicate an increase in deforestation and migration in the vicinity of the highway, but also highlight community initiatives, such as agroecology projects, that have contributed to more sustainable practices. The research suggests environmental governance policies and the creation of protected areas as ways to balance economic development and environmental conservation.
